RAAF/WRAAF East Sale 60s Era Reunion Update

10/03/2014 at 3:33 pm

Remember Sale Ites
7/8/9th November
There has been an amendment which might make a difference to your bookings for accommodation.
From Jim Birrell
we have cancelled the booking at the Cri and are now planning to use the Greyhound Racing Club (GRC).
The GRC is located near the corner of the Sale / Maffra Road and is very handy to a number of accommodation options. The GRC has offered us an upstairs room for both days at no cost. Bar facilities are available in the room.
On the same site is the Sale Showgrounds Motor Home / Caravan Park (03 51446432) with 112 powered sites and many unpowered sites available. This place has very good reviews in WikiCamps and I will certainly be staying there. 50 metres walk to the venue.
The ibis Styles Motel ( is 100 metres walk to the venue. Quote RAAF Reunion for discount.
Another very close motel is the Ace Swan, which is diagonally opposite the venue at 386 Princes Highway.
There are plenty of other places to stay in Sale so please don’t feel obliged to use those listed above.
We will have a casual Meet and Greet on the Friday, with finger food.
We will have a sit down dinner on Saturday in the room on Saturday evening. There is a happy hour at the venue from 5:30 to 6:30 which should start the evening quite nicely.
Ralph has arranged for the Swing Bridge to be opened between 3 and 4 on Saturday.
Ralph has also suggested that we may wish to visit the Services Museum at West Sale on the Saturday morning.
I will be trying to organise a game of Bowls with my old mate Dangler Lynch, who has confirmed that he will be attending this year.
Apologies to those who have already booked accommodation closer to the original venue but I assure you that we are on to a winner at the greyhound Track. Those who were at Paddy’s funeral will remember it well.

Information below from Jim Birrell

2014 reunion will be held on the weekend 7th to 9th November.

We plan to meet, greet and welcome all on Friday afternoon, say about 16:00, at the Criterion Hotel that is in Macalister St. We can have the standard Bistro Dinner and drinks there by our own arrangements. The Criterion has had a total facelift and is now a quality eating spot in Sale. As luck would have it, Ralph Faber is a mate of the manager and he has made the arrangements.

We are still working on activities for Saturday morning and afternoon and would welcome any suggestions. As I will have my Bowls with me, I am thinking about getting something going at Sale BC but that may clash with Pennants. I would dearly love to whop Dangler Lynch whom I understand is quite a champion player.

Some may wish to tour some of our favorite sites from the old days. There are the parking spots around Lake Guthridge that may bring back memories of watching the wildlife well into the night. There is the Swing Bridge, which also involved a good deal of wildlife and is now a designated as a “Historic Site”. (How old are we?)

Our reunion Dinner will be held at the Criterion Hotel on the Saturday Night. This usually turns into the perfect opportunity to tell a few “truths” about our early days and I am sure that this will be no different.

There will also be a farewell Breakfast at the hotel on Sunday morning. We will let you know about timings closer to the event.

There is plenty of accommodation around Sale and the surrounds. Marg and I will be staying at Caravan Park on the highway to Melbourne and the last time we were in Sale, we also noticed that the Stratford Motel does not seem to have changed since 1967.

The Beginning of the ExWRAAF Reunion Movement

31/01/2013 at 9:45 am

The exWRAAF movement probably started around 1970. Probably by Maxine Cheyne. Probably at a luncheon held at her home.

The first Australia wide reunion was definitely in 1976. Held with a luncheon at Maxine’s place again and a further meeting at the local CWA hall. About 49 ex WRAAF attended. Sandra Perry was there (second row from the top, 5th from right). Also Jackie Walsh nee Rodger (Kneeling on floor at right), next to her Joan Ramsay nee Arbon (next to Jackie at right).

Mary Bradshaw is fourth from left in first row behind person lounging in front. Incredibly Mary has a diary to say the photo is from January 1976. Saturday 17th January “we had a luncheon at the President home Maxine Cheyne and followed by a dinner at the CWA rooms at Kent Town. Joy Pepper, Pat Huskings, Dulcie Lang. Val MCoy, by Mary’s diary was there. Pep (Joy) 6 from L in second back row.

Can anyone else name themselves. Email me on This photo is crucial to the WRAAF reunion movement. It might be the first. Since then many gatherings have taken place and every two or three years a National reunion is held in alternating states. Let’s make it a quest to remember the reunions and where they have been held since this time.
